What People in Copenhagen Are Wearing at the Flea Market
A snapshot of spring fashion in the Danish capital
Since moving to Copenhagen, one of my favorite weekend rituals has been wandering through the city’s many flea markets. They’re not only great places to hunt for secondhand treasures, but also perfect spots for gathering style inspiration. As someone who loves people-watching and collecting inspiration from real-life sources (I’ve written about street style in Paris here and here), it only felt right to continue the tradition in Copenhagen:
Layering
People-watching in Copenhagen is truly a masterclass in layering. This time of year, the weather can be quite unpredictable. So, to make sure you’re appropriately dressed throughout the day, the easiest thing to do is add a few extra layers to your outfit.
Sneakers
This is kind of a no-brainer, as the sneaker has been firmly planted on the average Danish foot for so many years now that I’ve lost count. Danes are particularly fond of New Balance sneakers (and Salomon in the later years), but any sneaker is a welcome sneaker in Denmark.
Dad hats
I love seeing how Copenhageners get creative with headwear: Some wrap a silk scarf around their hair, while others experiment with less conventional silhouettes like a muted flat cap. A constant favorite is the classic baseball hat, which is, as Vogue writes, “basically a billboard to broadcast our personal tastes.” While you’ll see lots of hats with sports logos we all know, most Copenhageners seem to be wearing unknown (probably thrifted) ones that add a touch of mysteriousness to their whole look.
Oilskin jackets
The barn jacket was one of fall’s big trends last year, but in Copenhagen, it’s carried over into spring. My favorite ones are the oilskin jackets, which are constructed of waxed canvas with a corduroy collar.
Vests
In the same spirit as oilskin jackets, practical, outdoorsy vests are everywhere. Gorp-core really hits its stride in Copenhagen.
Trench coats
And lastly, trench coats—both classic and cropped—are out in full force. It is spring, after all!
